2000 Guineas Favourites in 2026 – Can Bow Echo, Gstaad or Distant Storm Take The Honours?
The Betfred 2000 Guineas Stakes takes place at Newmarket on Saturday, May 2nd, representing the first British Classic of the 2026 flat racing season.
First run in 1809 and established by The Jockey Club under Sir Charles Bunbury, the race was named after its original prize fund of 2,000 guineas, equivalent to £2,100.
The one-mile contest on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course is the championship test for three-year-old colts and traditionally determines the best miler of a generation.
This year’s renewal carries a total prize fund of £525,000, with fifteen runners declared for the 3:35pm contest.
The 2026 edition presents one of the most competitive fields in recent years, with three horses emerging as the clear 2000 Guineas favourites in the betting markets.
Bow Echo – Race Favourite

Bow Echo, trained by George Boughey, is second in the betting at odds around 3/1. The son of Night Of Thunder boasts an unbeaten record of three wins from three starts.
His most recent victory came in the Group 2 Royal Lodge Stakes at Newmarket in September 2025, where he travelled well and led approaching the Dip, taking his flawless record with no apparent issues on the track.
Trainer George Boughey described him as the best colt he has trained and confirmed the Guineas was very much the plan, noting the horse’s raw potential.
Distant Storm
Distant Storm, representing the Charlie Appleby and Godolphin team, is second favourite at around 4/1. The chestnut colt finished third in last year’s Dewhurst Stakes and then went on to win the Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket a month later.
Godolphin has won the 2000 Guineas three times in the last four years with Ruling Court (2025), Notable Speech (2024), and Coroebus in 2022.
Trainer Charlie Appleby indicated the colt settled better when switched to more patient tactics and ran with credit in the Dewhurst, with the step up to a mile potentially within reach.
Gstaad

Gstaad completes the leading trio, leading the way at odds of 11/4 which has dropped from 4/1 earlier in the week, largely because the Aidan O’Brien-trained bay colt carries the highest official rating in the field.
He has won three and finished second in the other three of his six career starts, including a Grade 1 victory at Del Mar in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf in November 2025.
Trainer Aidan O’Brien indicated the colt would be suited by the English or Irish 2,000 Guineas, with jockey Ryan Moore stating Gstaad travelled beautifully and is obviously improving with each run.

Honourable Mentions – Contenders Who Could Upset The Odds
Several horses outside the leading three possess the credentials to cause an upset if conditions align favourably.
King’s Trail, another Godolpin and Charlie Appleby runner, sits at around 11/1. The chestnut colt by Sea The Stars won comfortably at Kempton in March on his reappearance, travelling powerfully before easing to the front.
Oxagon, trained by John and Thady Gosden, is priced from 10/1. The Frankel colt won the Craven Stakes impressively, and his previous form is more mixed, including a 5th (from 5) in the Futurity Trophy Stakes in October at Doncaster.
Avicenna at 14/1 represents another interesting possibility. The Roger Varian-trained colt finished second in the Craven Stakes behind Oxagon and showed plenty of credit despite lacking the winner’s pace.
His debut victory in the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes demonstrated his ability, and he appears the type to improve again with the run under his belt.
The Verdict: Who Will Prevail?

This 2000 Guineas represents one of the most open renewals in recent memory, with legitimate claims for at least half a dozen runners.
Based on the form book and recent performances, my vote goes to Gstaad as the most likely winner.
His rating, Grade 1 experience, win in the Breeders Cup, and narrowly beaten second places (by the smallest of margins) give me more confidence than I have in Bow Echo, who, yes, has won three in a row, but at a lower level than the races Gstaad has been competing in.
The main concern surrounds his draw in stall seven and whether Ryan Moore can secure a prominent position from the outset, but his quality should prevail if he gets clear running.
Distant Storm cannot be dismissed lightly, given Godolphin’s recent dominance in this race, and Charlie Appleby’s training prowess, and his class could see him hit the frame at a minimum.
The outsiders who could outrun their odds include Thesecretadversary and Alparslan, both of whom possess the class and stamina to feature prominently if the pace develops to suit.
A Classic For The Ages
The 2026 Betfred 2000 Guineas promises to deliver compelling drama on the Rowley Mile.
With fifteen declared runners carrying legitimate claims and the absence of a dominant favourite, the race should be run at a genuine pace, potentially suiting those with tactical speed and a strong finishing kick.
The ground is forecast to be good, which should ensure a fair contest without undue bias towards any particular running style.
