The 2021 Grand National weights have been revealed and it is a triple header as Bristol De Mai, Easysland, and Santini have all been handed top weight of 11-10. Putting them on a rating of 167, the trio head the 105 entries with Delta Work, Presenting Percy and Tiger Roll next in line, all on 11-09.
In a big change to the usual pomp and ceremony associated with the revealing of the weights for the Grand National, this year they were announced live on Racing TV. With Ed Chamberlain hosting the program today, the broadcast was a mix of pre-recorded zoom call chats with trainers and owners before the reveal.
As expected, Gordon Elliott confirmed he was prepping Tiger Roll for his historic bid to win a third consecutive title. That is in contrast to the annual threat from the O’Leary’s that if the dual winner is handicapped too heavily he will be withdrawn. Ultimately the decision will be Michael O’Leary’s but his words had little impact on the BHA Handicapper Martin Greenwood who has tried to make the race as fair as possible.
Three-time winning owner, Trevor Hemmings also made time for a chat with Ed and is as excited as ever at the prospect of adding another victory to his collection. His biggest hopeful looks like Cloth Cap, trained by Jonjo O’Neill.
He was handed a very generous and winnable weight of 10-05 and the odds on him plummeted. He is now the second favourite to win the 2021 Grand National, behind Tiger Roll. But in addition to Cloth Cap, Hemmings could also be represented by Lake View Lad and Deise Aba.

Next Stages For The 2021 Grand National
So now that the entries are in and the 2021 Grand National Weights are out what comes next?
The first scratchings deadline will be on 2nd March although not much really happens at this point. Horses that are known to be injured generally come out at this stage.
Following that is the second scratchings deadline on 23rd March. This is always more interesting for two reasons. The first is that it is the deadline for qualification. Prior to this date, the potential runner must have started in a steeple chase during the current season.
Currently Burrows Saint, Anibale Fly, Talkischeap, Champagne Classic and OK Corral do not meet that requirement. That said Burrows Saint is due to race in the Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse on February 22nd so that will tick that box.
The second reason is that the Cheltenham Festival will be over by March 23rd. Plenty of horses will have entries into both and how they come out of Cheltenham will often determine whether or not they also go to Aintree.
The five-day confirmation stage for the 2021 Grand National is 5th April with the final declaration stage on 8th April. And then, of course, we have the big day itself – Grand National Day on Saturday, April 10th 2021 at 5.15pm.
How The Odds Have Changed
As expected with the weights announcement today, the odds have also had a major overhaul. Paddy Power bookmakers have now moved to Non Runner Money Back so their odds are lower than a lot of other bookmakers. But at least if your horse doesn’t run you will get your money back.
As such, Tiger Roll has gone from 16/1 antepost to 10/1 NRNB. Cloth Cap has moved into 2nd favourite position and Kimberlite Candy has moved from 25/1 to 16/1.
