The 2026 Juddmonte International Stakes takes centre stage at York Racecourse today, Wednesday 19th August, as the opening-day highlight of the four-day Ebor Festival.

Run over 1m2½f on the Knavesmire, the £1.5 million Group 1 is one of European Flat racing’s ultimate tests of a horse’s speed, class and ability to sustain it over the intermediate distance.

This year’s race is scheduled for 3.35pm, with nine runners set to go to post on good ground.

The International is the race that gives the Ebor Festival its instant sense of occasion. While the meeting builds towards Saturday’s famous Ebor Handicap, the Wednesday feature is the established-champion-versus-rising-star contest.

That generational clash is particularly strong in 2026. Ombudsman, last year’s winner and the highest-rated horse in the line-up, returns to defend his crown.

He faces Constitution River, Aidan O’Brien’s exceptional three-year-old, who arrives after winning both the Prix du Jockey Club and Coral-Eclipse.

Andrew Balding’s Item, a proven York specialist, completes a compelling market-leading trio.

Ombudsman Heads The Market

Ombudsman is the narrow favourite at odds of around 6/5, with William Buick booked to ride the five-year-old for John and Thady Gosden.

A course-and-distance winner, he is the established benchmark in the field. His record is formidable with nine wins from 12 career starts, including victory in this race 12 months ago.

There is, however, a significant weight-for-age factor to consider. Ombudsman carries 9st 8lb, conceding 7lb to the three-year-old colts. That said, he is not alone carrying that weight, but it provides a genuine opening for the younger generation.

Ombudsman is not merely defending a title; he is also hoping to make history by becoming only the fourth horse to win two International Stakes, and the first since 1996 to do so.

Constitution River and Item

Constitution River is forecast at 11/8 and represents the most obvious threat to the favourite. Ryan Moore rides the three-year-old colt for Aidan O’Brien, and his profile is hard to fault.

He goes off with five victories from six starts, and recent Group 1-winning form that places him among the most exciting horses of his generation.

His wins in the French Derby and Coral-Eclipse have established him as O’Brien’s standout three-year-old, and the Eclipse success is especially relevant because it proved he can defeat older opposition.

Constitution River’s key question is not raw talent but whether York’s fast, searching 1m2½f will allow him to show it at the same level as he has elsewhere. The evidence suggests it should.

Item is the 8/1 third favourite and could be considerably more than an each-way footnote. The Andrew Balding-trained colt is owned by Juddmonte, the race sponsor, and comes into the contest with a particularly persuasive York record.

He has won both the Dante and York Stakes over this course and distance, and that latest victory offered an ideal preparation for the International.Colin Keane takes the ride on Item.

In simple terms, the Juddmonte International Stakes presents three contrasting claims. Ombudsman has the proven Group 1 authority, Constitution River has the weight allowance and elite upward trajectory, while Item has the local course-and-distance credentials.

The Rest of the Field

The nine-runner field contains several runners capable of influencing the pace, placing or even upsetting the front three if the principals fail to perform.

Number Horse Trainer Jockey Odds
3 Ombudsman J & T Gosden W Buick 11/10
7 Constitution River A P O’Brien R L Moore 11/8
9 Item A M Balding Colin Keane 8/1
1 Almaqam E Walker K Shoemark 16/1
8 Hawk Mountain A P O’Brien Wayne Lordan 20/1
5 Zaydann F Graffard M Barzalona 28/1
4 Pride Of Arras R M Beckett Rossa Ryan 40/1
2 Devil’s Advocate J & T Gosden R Havlin 200/1
6 Action A P O’Brien Ronan Whelan 200/1

Almaqam is the most obvious outsider with credentials. Ed Walker’s five-year-old arrives following a win in the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh in May.

Zaydann is another with a progressive profile. The French-trained four-year-old has won his last four races and is partnered by Mickael Barzalona for Francis-Henri Graffard.

His unbeaten current sequence is notable, but those wins came at a much lower level than those at the top of the betting. That said, he brings momentum and an unknown ceiling.

Hawk Mountain, third behind Constitution River last time, is Aidan O’Brien’s other serious contender, and we all know you can never discount O’Brien’s second string in any race!

Pride Of Arras, meanwhile, has course-and-distance experience and was behind Item in the York Stakes, while Devil’s Advocate and Action could have tactical roles in a contest expected to be run at a strong pace.

O’Brien’s Record Bid

Aidan O’Brien comes to York as the race’s most successful trainer, with seven Juddmonte International Stakes victories.

His previous winners include Giant’s Causeway, Dylan Thomas, Duke Of Marmalade, Rip Van Winkle, Declaration Of War, Australia and Japan, an extraordinary roll call that charts his dominance of the European middle-distance division across more than two decades.

This year, O’Brien fields Constitution River, Hawk Mountain and Action. Constitution River is plainly the stable’s headline act, with Ryan Moore’s booking reinforcing that status, but multiple runners give the Ballydoyle operation options in a race where tempo and positioning can be pivotal.

An eighth victory would extend O’Brien’s own training record and underline the enduring influence of Ballydoyle on York’s most prestigious Group 1.

More importantly, a Constitution River success would elevate him from a leading three-year-old to a horse with a serious claim to being Europe’s pre-eminent 10-furlong performer.
