The 2026 Punchestown Gold Cup over 3m213y is one of the flagship Grade 1 chases of the Irish jumps season, staged on Wednesday 29 April as the centrepiece of Gold Cup day at Punchestown.

It offers a total prize fund of €300,000, with €176,700 to the winner, and regularly brings together the best staying chasers from Ireland and Britain for a final-season clash.

This year’s renewal has just five runners and is dominated by Willie Mullins, who trains four of the five, while Gavin Cromwell’s Inothewayurthinkin is the sole runner from another yard.

On yielding ground and with 18 fences to jump, this small-field race should still be a thorough test of stamina, jumping, and tactical speed, even with so few runners.

Gaelic Warrior – Willie Mullins & Paul Townend

Gaelic Warrior, an eight-year-old for the Ricci colours, comes into this race on the back of a comprehensive eight‑length success in the Cheltenham Gold Cup over 3m2½f, where he powered clear of Jango Baie up the hill.

That victory confirmed his stamina for a searching Gold Cup test, marking him out as one of the top staying chasers in training.

Earlier in the season, he had beaten Fact To File by a neck over 2m4f in the John Durkan at Punchestown, then finished second to the same rival over 3m in the Irish Gold Cup, shaping as though a stronger-run staying test would suit.

Gaelic Warrior’s profile is unusual in that he began as a top-class 2m–2m4f horse, winning the Arkle at Cheltenham and a 3m1f Grade 1 at Aintree, but he has repeatedly shown that he now stays three miles and further well when settling.

His tendency to race keenly has been tempered by the application of a hood, and his more recent performances suggest he is more straightforward, jumping straighter and relaxing better.

With Paul Townend booked for the Punchestown Gold Cup, and recent Grade 1 wins at both two miles and staying trips on his record, he brings a blend of pace and stamina that is ideally suited to a small-field tactical Gold Cup around Punchestown.

Fact To File – Willie Mullins & Mark Walsh

Fact To File, a nine-year-old owned by JP McManus, already has a strong Punchestown record and arrives as last season’s Ryanair Chase hero and a triple Grade 1 winner over 2m4f and 3m.

This season, he again advertised his quality by defeating Gaelic Warrior by five lengths in the Irish Gold Cup over 3m at Leopardstown, confirming his stamina and ability to compete with the best.

Although he was only sixth in the King George at Kempton at Christmas, connections were happy to forgive that run on very fast ground, and he bounced right back with that authoritative Leopardstown win.

His Punchestown record is solid, with a Grade 1 novice win over 3m and a previous Festival run over 2m when fourth in a much sharper test behind Marine Nationale.

Mark Walsh knows him well, he jumps economically and travels smoothly, and on all known form he sets a very high standard at this trip.

Inothewayurthinkin – Gavin Cromwell & Keith Donoghue

Inothewayurthinkin represents Gavin Cromwell and gives the race a key form line through both Cheltenham and Leopardstown Grade 1s.

Since 2024, he has progressed from a Kim Muir handicap win to Grade 1 novice success at Aintree, fulfilling that promise, in 2025, by winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup, defeating Galopin Des Champs by six lengths with a powerful staying performance.

He is a genuine top-level stayer; however, this season’s earlier runs were underwhelming, including a down-the-field effort behind Gaelic Warrior at Punchestown over 2m4f and a tame run behind Affordable Fury in the Savills Chase, before falling in the Gold Cup at Leopardstown.

However, cheekpieces and a return to spring ground sparked a revival. At this year’s Cheltenham Festival, he again finished strongly for third behind Gaelic Warrior in the 3m2½f chase, shaping as though another big late run was coming despite an unconvincing round of jumping.

His jumping can still be slow and slightly right, which is a concern around Punchestown, but his engine is not in doubt, and the fact that he has won Grade 1s at 3m and beyond keeps him firmly in the argument.

Grangeclare West – Willie Mullins & Brian Hayes

Grangeclare West is a ten-year-old who has been mixing Grade 1 company with valuable handicaps, and he has hinted that a big staying prize is within reach if things fall his way.

He was second to Galopin Des Champs in the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown in February 2025, and has also performed well in deep handicaps, including a close third in the Grand National at Aintree in 2025.

His latest start in the Aintree National saw him unseat at the first, which is easy to forgive, and prior to that, he had beaten high‑class rival Gerri Colombe in heavy ground at Fairyhouse over 3m2f, to win the Bobbyjo Chase.

Brian Hayes retains the ride, and if the race becomes a strong test where stamina is emphasised more than tactical speed, Grangeclare West looks the Mullins horse most likely to capitalise if the top two in the market underperform.

Champ Kiely – Willie Mullins & Danny Mullins

champ kiely

Champ Kiely is a ten-year-old who has reinvented himself as a staying chaser after a high-class novice campaign over both hurdles and fences.

He produced a career-best over fences when winning the Grade 1 Champion Novice Chase over 2m4f at the 2025 Punchestown Festival, stretching right away from Ballyburn over this sort of extended trip.

Since then, his form has been mixed, but he ran a big race when just denied by Only By Night in a Naas Grade 3 over 2m last November, conceding plenty of weight over a trip short of his optimum.

More recently, he has been highly tried in top handicaps and Grade 1 company, including a respectable run in the 2026 Aintree Grand National, where he weakened late but shaped as though marathon trips might just stretch him.

With Danny Mullins booked and no obvious front‑runner among the others, he could be ridden positively to make use of his sound jumping and proven stamina at this level.

Nearly A Two Horse Race

On balance, the percentage call is that Fact To File will come out on top, with Gaelic Warrior rated the main danger.

Fact To File has already beaten Gaelic Warrior decisively over 3m in the Irish Gold Cup, travels smoothly, jumps with more economy, and is returning to a track where he has Grade 1 winning form at this sort of trip.

The yielding ground should be ideal, and this race has been his target for some time, with connections specifically pointing him at Punchestown rather than Aintree earlier in the spring.

Gaelic Warrior brings the flashier recent performance thanks to his Cheltenham Gold Cup win and has the tactical speed to gain a good position in this small field, but a relatively quick turnaround from a hard race at Cheltenham is a slight concern.

Inothewayurthinkin looks the value alternative, especially if there is a strong pace that accentuates stamina, yet his jumping remains a potential weakness against such polished rivals.

Among the outsiders, Grangeclare West is preferred to Champ Kiely as the one most likely to outrun his price, given his staying profile and recent high-level efforts in big-field handicaps.
