How time flies. One minute we’re eagerly awaiting the entries for the Grand National 2022 and the next Cheltenham has been and gone and we’re at the second scratching stage.

Normally, this is one of the least exciting stages. Trainers and connections tend to wait until closer to the time to see if their horses have recovered enough from Prestbury Park to take their chances at Aintree.

However, this time around a lot has happened. Not only have the two top-weighted horses, Conflated and Galvin, been withdrawn but so too has third in line, Melon.

What that means is that Chris’s Dream from Henry De Bromhead now takes the top spot. Plus all the horses in the field have had their weights raised by 5lbs. Because as we know, the number one horse must carry 11-10.

Along with the three horses mentioned above, eleven others have also been scratched at this stage.

Horses Scratched From Grand National 2022

  • Conflated
  • Galvin
  • Melon
  • Chantry House
  • Franco De Port
  • Ontheropes
  • Itchy Feet
  • Windsor Avenue
  • Back On The Lash
  • Kapcorse
  • Jett
  • Cloudy Glen
  • Braeside
  • Milan Native

So with those 14 horses no longer in contention, it means that quite a few move up the list and are now guaranteed a spot.

That includes Phoenix Way who is trained by Harry Fry and owned by JP McManus. As it stands, he is the last horse guaranteed to make the field in the 40th position at this stage for the race on April 9th.

Also making the cut is the Becher Chase winner Snow Leopardess. The mare has moved up to 38th spot just behind last year’s favourite Cloth Cap who will now also make the starting line-up.

Runners Still Waiting

It looks history is about to repeat itself for Blaklion and his connections. The 13-year-old is the oldest horse entered this year and was the final runner to make the cut in 2021. He now needs only three more runners to get scratched to once again takes his chances around the Aintree fences for what will probably be the last time.

He first ran in the race in 2017 finishing in fourth place. He was brought down in 2018, skipped 2019, 2020 was cancelled and in 2021 finished in 6th place. Can he really do it again in 2022? He has already won twice this season at Haydock so don’t rule him out.

Also nervously waiting is Deise Aba from trainer Philip Hobbs. If he gets in he will run in the same colours as Cloth Cap, both owned by the late Trevor Hemmings. Wouldn’t it be something if one of them could win in honour of their legendary owner.

Poker Party for Henry De Bromhead and Death Duty from Gordon Elliott make up the next two hopefuls. This time last year Blaklion was in spot number 48 and he made the cut, so anything is possible.
