In what almost seems like history repeating itself, Tiger Roll has been withdrawn at the first scratching stage of the proceedings for the 2022 Grand National. Exactly the same as last year.

From 107 official entries, which ended up being 106 by the time the weights were announced, 14 potential runners have been withdrawn.

That means there are now 92 entries remaining for the Aintree showpiece on April 9th.

2022 Grand National Withdrawals

The first scratching stage is generally uneventful. with a couple of weeks to make some decisions after the weights come out, some connections decide to take their chances elsewhere.

At this stage, the Cheltenham Festival is also on the horizon and there are quite a few with entires to both meetings. How they fair at Prestbury Park can determine if they head to or swerve Aintree.

Tiger Roll getting taken out is no great surprise. Despite a more lenient weight from the BHA Handicapper in 2022, owner Michael O’Leary voiced his disapproval and the decision was made to aim Tiger Roll at the Glenfarclas Chase, after which he will be retired.

Assemble, another Gigginstown horse trained by Joseph O’Brien has also been taken out of contention.

Along with Eklat De Rire, Off You Go and Sam Brown, they are the only five horses that were originally guaranteed a spot in the top 40.

That now means that the likes of Dingo Dollar, Top Ville Ben and Highland Hunter move up the list and make the cut.

For the first stage in 2022, 14 horses were withdrawn.

Movement On The Betting Markets

As you can imagine a lot has happened in the two weeks since the weights for the 2022 Grand National were revealed.

Once the BHA Handicapper has set the weights in stone, connections are then free to race their horses wherever they like without fear that a great run will impact their rating.

Case in point is the Ted Walsh trained Any Second Now. Already a dab hand at Aintree having placed in last year’s race, the 10-year-old headed to Fairyhouse for the BobbyJo Chase on Feb 26th and proceeded to just pip Escaria Ten to the post.

As a result Any Second Now moved to as short as 10/1 on the Grand National 2022 betting market and is the current ante-post race favourite.

The stellar performance from Escaria Ten also saw his odds drop to as little as 12/1 ante-post, hot on the heels of Any Second Now.

While Galvin hasn’t moved out in the market, remaining on odds of 16/1, he is further down the pecking order as the likes of Enjoy D’Allen and Snow Leopardess start to look like more attractive prospects.

That is largely due to the fact that Galvin could be heading for a run in the Gold Cup at Cheltenham plus being burdened by top weight didn’t help his cause either!
