Eider Handicap Chase Odds, Runners & Preview 2026
The Eider Handicap Chase is a proper test of stamina, run over four miles and a furlong in the depths of winter, and the 2026 renewal looks as tough and competitive as ever.
It’s a race for those who relish the long grind through testing ground. As usual, it’s not about speed — it’s about guts, jumping, and a willingness to keep going when others have long since waved the white flag.
This year’s line-up features a mix of seasoned stayers and recent improvers, all eyeing a prestigious northern success. After sorting through some well-handicapped contenders and others trying to recapture their glory days, preference goes to Livin On Luco, whose recent form screams “ready for this”.
Livin On Luco: The One to Beat
Livin On Luco has made a habit of setting his own tempo and daring rivals to catch him. His bold front-running style won him the Southern National earlier in the season, and he followed up with a solid fourth in the Welsh National over nearly four miles. That effort showed his stamina, and more importantly, his appetite for deep ground and a long-distance slog.
The Eider demands respect but rewards rhythm, and few maintain rhythm better than a good front-runner. If Livin On Luco gets into his usual stride, he could make this another test of others’ patience rather than his bravery.
Knockanore: The Local Legend Returns
Winning this race once is a feat; doing it again would be something special. Knockanore romped home in last year’s Eider and does look a generous price if he can rediscover that form. The phrase “if back to his best” often signals a gamble of both faith and memory.
Connections will be hoping a return to this stamina-laden test sparks something. Stranger things have certainly happened — especially over four miles in February at Newcastle.
Fortunate Man: In with a Shout
The aptly named Fortunate Man hasn’t exactly lived up to the moniker on recent starts, he disappointed last time, yet horses have short memories and long races like the Eider can easily flip the script. If his jumping holds together, he could easily be among the finishers when others begin to tire.
Anglers Crag: Familiar Territory
Few horses line up for the Eider knowing exactly what it takes to win it, but Anglers Crag can. He landed this race back in 2024 off a 4lb lower mark and returned with a sparkling victory that suggested there’s still fire in his belly.
This is tougher, no doubt. But the combination of course form, stamina, and confidence makes him a danger to all. For a horse who’s already conquered Newcastle’s fences in winter gloom, a repeat triumph can’t be ruled out.
The Challengers: A Strong Supporting Cast
Beyond the main quartet, there’s plenty of depth to this year’s renewal.
- Dom Of Mary (8/1) arrives with strong credentials, having finished powerfully to win over 3m6f here and placing sixth in the Welsh National. You’d expect him to keep plugging on when the field thins out.
- Mr Vango (10/1), known for his Midlands National win at 4m2f, will feel right at home over this marathon trip. His latest run was poor, but this is a better fit — and his proven stamina cannot be questioned.
- Red Delta (14/1) is up 11lb for his Lincolnshire National win but handles this type of test well. If he repeats that determined effort, he could easily sneak onto the scene late.
- Val Dancer (11/1) is another former Welsh National hero, though recent runs haven’t matched his past glories. Still, class is permanent, as they say, even if energy levels occasionally take a winter holiday.
- Whistle Stop Tour (22/1) hasn’t shown much recently.
- Only The Bold (18/1) seems more miss than hit over staying trips.
Verdict: Luco to Lead the Way
The Eider often rewards the bold — both horses and punters alike. With that in mind, Livin On Luco is the standout for 2026. His strong Welsh National run showed he stays extreme distances, his jumping is assured, and his habit of making all could be tailor-made for a test like this.
Knockanore is the obvious threat if he rediscovers last year’s spark, while Fortunate Man looks ready to run far better than his latest effort suggests. Anglers Crag, too, holds strong claims for another fine run at a track he clearly enjoys.
The Eider is a proper staying test – if you’re having a punt, Betfred’s competitive odds and generous welcome offer are worth a look.
