You Need To Place An Each Way Bet

Betfred, like all bookmakers, only pays out on the places if you have made an EACH WAY bet.

An each-way bet is a type of wager commonly used in horse racing and other sports betting, such as golf or tennis.

It involves placing two equal bets on the same selection: one bet to win and another bet to place.

The “win” bet is a straightforward bet on the selection to win the race or event outright.

The “place” bet is a bet on your horse to finish in one of the places from 2nd to 7th.

In the Grand National, because it has more than 16 runners, the place terms they pay will be 1/5 of the odds for those horses that finish 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, or 7th.

If the runner you back wins the race, both the win bet and the place bet are paid out in full.

If the horse finishes between 2nd and 7th place, the place bet is paid out at the agreed fraction of the odds (e.g. 1/5) and the win bet loses.

And if your horse finishes the race but comes in 8th place or more, then sadly, you get no money back from your bet.

Paying Out To SEVEN Places

There are specific rules governing the payout of the places in bigger races. ‘Places’ are those that finish but do not win the race.

In the UK, bookmakers adhere to the following guidelines:

Terms for Each Way Betting

  • 2-4 runners 1st only
  • 5-7 runners 1st, 2nd
  • 8+ runners 1st, 2nd, 3rd
  • 16+ runner handicaps 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th

So as you can see, bookmakers are only obliged to pay out to the first four places home in the Grand National. However, this is rarely the case.

To spruce up the virtual shop window and draw in more customers, bookmakers will pay out to five, six or in this case, seven places – well, most of them will.

Pay Out Examples

So what do those odds really mean when it comes to winning money on the Grand National?

Here’s a simple example:

  • Roi Mage (who was 7th last year) is currently 40/1
  • You put £5 each way on him – £10 total bet
  • Hypothetically he comes home in 4th place
  • The bookmaker will now have to pay you £45

Here’s the maths:

£5 on the horse to win doesn’t return any money because your horse did not win.

£5 to place (he came in 4th) at 40/1 = £5 x 40 = £200. The bookmaker is paying 1/5 of the odds.

So it’s £200/5 = £40 PLUS your £5 place stake back = £45

In some cases, even higher-priced horses finished in 4th place. Oscar Time was 4th in 2013 at 66/1. Alvarado in 2014 was 33/1 when he placed fourth.

Even in 2022 when Noble Yeats won at 50/1, Santini ran home in fourth place at 33/1.

So there definitely are plenty of opportunities to root for the long shot in the National.
