The Cheltenham Gold Cup rarely follows the script. While the betting market often focuses on the obvious contenders, history shows that the race can easily produce surprises when conditions turn the contest into a true test of stamina.

The 2026 renewal is no different. Much of the pre-race discussion has centred on leading names such as The Jukebox Man, Gaelic Warrior, Jango Baie and Haiti Couleurs. Yet behind those headline acts sits a group of horses trading at much bigger prices who still possess the ability to make their presence felt.

Among those overlooked runners are Firefox, L’Homme Presse and Gold Tweet, three horses who arrive with different profiles but each capable of outrunning expectations if the race unfolds in their favour.

Few horses in the field arrive with a more consistent record than Firefox, although he has yet to deliver the kind of headline performance needed to be considered a major Gold Cup contender.

The Irish-trained chaser has already shown that he can hold his own in high-quality company. His victory in a Grade 2 chase at Down Royal earlier in the season demonstrated his ability to compete at a strong level, and he has repeatedly finished close behind some of the best staying chasers in training.

However, stepping up into the Cheltenham Gold Cup represents a very different challenge.

When he tried three miles in the Irish Gold Cup at Leopardstown, Firefox finished a respectable fourth but was beaten by around fourteen lengths. That performance suggested he still has something to find with the leading contenders.

Even so, horses like Firefox can sometimes benefit from the intense pace of the Gold Cup. If the early leaders go too hard and begin to tire on the long climb to the finish, a horse who stays strongly and keeps galloping can suddenly find himself running into a place.

At a big price, Firefox may not be the most obvious winner, but he could easily be the sort of horse who runs better than expected.

L’Homme Presse – A Star Looking to Roll Back the Years

For racing fans, L’Homme Presse is a familiar and respected name.

At his best, he has already proven himself a top-class staying chaser. His Grade 1 Brown Advisory victory at the Cheltenham Festival in 2022 confirmed his ability to perform at the highest level on this track, while his win in the Cotswold Chase in 2025 and second place in 2026 showed he still retained plenty of ability.

However, time waits for no horse, and now at eleven years old, he faces a very difficult task against younger rivals who may simply have more improvement left.

His recent performances suggest he remains competitive, but the margins between winning and finishing out of the places in a Gold Cup are extremely small. In races this demanding, age can sometimes become the decisive factor.

That said, experienced horses have surprised people before in the Gold Cup. If the race turns into a true stamina test on soft ground, L’Homme Presse’s toughness and jumping could allow him to stay in contention longer than many expect.

While he may no longer be the force he once was, writing him off completely could prove risky.

Gold Tweet – The Intriguing Outsider

If there is one horse in the field who truly fits the description of a dark horse, it may be Gold Tweet.

The French-trained runner has built his reputation primarily over hurdles and has already shown he can perform well at Cheltenham. His victory in the Grade 2 Cleeve Hurdle a few seasons ago demonstrated that he handles the course and stays the trip.

Since switching between hurdles and fences, his form has been slightly harder to read. He finished runner-up in a Grade 1 chase in France earlier this season, which suggests his ability remains intact, but his form in Britain has been more mixed.

What could bring him into the race is the weather.

Gold Tweet has often performed best when the ground becomes extremely testing. If heavy rain arrives and turns the Gold Cup into a real battle of stamina, conditions could begin to play to his strengths.

At a very large price, he is unlikely to attract huge support in the betting market. Yet horses arriving from slightly different racing programmes have occasionally produced shocks at Cheltenham before.

Why Outsiders Sometimes Thrive in the Gold Cup

One of the reasons the Cheltenham Gold Cup can produce surprising results is the sheer difficulty of the race itself.

Three miles and two furlongs around Cheltenham’s demanding course places enormous strain on both stamina and jumping. Horses must maintain rhythm over twenty-two fences while also conserving enough energy for the steep climb from the final obstacle to the finish line.

Even small mistakes or minor changes in pace can dramatically affect the outcome.

That unpredictability means the race does not always fall neatly into the hands of the favourites. A horse travelling quietly in midfield can suddenly find himself closing rapidly when others begin to struggle.

For outsiders such as Firefox, L’Homme Presse and Gold Tweet, that scenario may offer their best chance of becoming involved.

Could an Outsider Cause a Surprise?

While the most likely winner of the 2026 Cheltenham Gold Cup still appears to lie among the leading contenders, dismissing the outsiders entirely would be a mistake.

Firefox brings solid recent form and consistency. L’Homme Presse carries experience and proven Cheltenham class. Gold Tweet offers the potential wildcard if the ground becomes extremely testing.

Each of them faces a tough assignment against the market leaders, but the Gold Cup has a long history of rewarding toughness, stamina and a little bit of luck.

And when the runners turn for home at Cheltenham, with the famous hill looming ahead, it would not be the first time that a horse overlooked in the betting suddenly emerges from the pack to challenge for racing’s greatest prize.
