In a year that saw nine more entries than in 2023, 81 Grand National runners remain in contention for the big race on Saturday, April 13th 2024.

From 94 official entries, which ended up being just 87 by the time the weights were announced, six more potential runners have been withdrawn.

That means there are 81 potential 2024 Grand National runners left in the running for one of the 34 available spots.

So who are they and were there any surprises at the first scratching stage?

2024 Grand National Withdrawals at First Scratching Stage

The first scratching stage is generally uneventful. It has only been two weeks since the weights came out, and while some connections have decided to take their chances elsewhere, others are still weighing up their options.

At this stage, the Cheltenham Festival is also on the horizon, and there are quite a few with entries to both meetings.

How they perform at Prestbury Park will play a large hand in determining if they head to or swerve Aintree.

Dusart from Nicky Henderson was one of six withdrawn and one of three who were all guaranteed a run in next month’s Grand National.

That means Henderson’s chances of eventually winning a National have decreased significantly as it looks like Mister Coffey won’t make the cut, leaving Fantastic Lady as his last viable option.

Even then, at number 57, he will need quite a few to come out otherwise, Henderson won’t even have a runner.

For the first scratching stage in 2024, 6 horses were withdrawn.

  • Fakir D’Oudairies
  • Le Milos
  • Dusart
  • Sail Away
  • Ashtown Lad
  • Minella Trump

That now means that Run Wild Fred, Latenightpass, and Minella Crooner all move up a space with Mac Tottie the last horse to make the cut at this stage.

Movement On The Betting Markets

As you can imagine a lot has happened in the two weeks since the weights for the 2024 Grand National were revealed.

Once the BHA Handicapper has set the weights in stone, connections are then free to race their horses wherever they like without fear that a great run will impact their rating.

To be fair, not a lot of connections have done that, especially those with Cheltenham entries. But there has been some movement at the top of the market.

I Am Maximus went flying up the odds and now vies for ante-post race favourite with Vanillier. Both are roughly 10/1 with most bookmakers but those odds and their positions fluctuate.

Vanillier finished in second place last year and yet the BHA Handicapper didn’t penalise him for that great run.

Set to only carry 10-08 and with proven experience around those tricky fences, and it’s easy to see why his odds are so low.

I Am Maximus from Willie Mullins ran in and won the BobbyJo Chase at Fairyhouse after the weights were announced.

With a five-point rise in his Official Rating, had that happened before the weights, he would be on 11-07 rather than the 11-02 he was given. And that 5lbs advantage could be the difference between winning and not winning!

Meetingofthewaters was another mover, going from around 25/1 to 16/1 in the Grand National betting markets. That’s interesting not least because as it stands, he hasn’t actually qualified for the race.

At seven years old, he only has five chase starts under his belt and he needs six by March 26th, 2024 to secure a spot. With three options at Cheltenham, a run in any of them would satisfy the rules of the Grand National.

Otherwise, as expected, with so few horses withdrawn at the first scratching stage, very little has happened on the betting markets.

That and the Grand National tends to get a little bit ignored before the Cheltenham Festival.
