The 152nd Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs brings together a full gate with Renegade and Commandment vying for the clear morning-line favourite, both trading back and forth between 4/1 and 5/1, with Further Ado heading the chasing pack at around 6/1.

Chief Wallabee (7/1) and The Puma (10/1) sit just behind the top trio, while the rest of the field is priced at 12/1 or bigger, offering plenty of each-way and value angles.

Silent Tactic was an early talking horse but scratched in the week of the race, allowing longshot Great White (100/1) into the field and adding another big price to consider.

With early pace spread across several gates and no dominant closer, the race looks open enough for a double-figure odds runner to get the right trip and hit the frame, if not spring a full upset.

Where Value Might Lie

Renegade justifiably sits in the top three of the market following a strong prep season that has convinced many handicappers he deserves his 5/1 quote.

He has drawn post 1, which can be a blessing or a curse; after all, no winner has come from the rail in 40 years!

Commandment and Further Ado bring solid credentials, tactical speed, and consistent graded-stakes form that appeals to many bettors seeking reliability at the top of the market.

Chief Wallabee and The Puma round out a tightly bunched group of main contenders, meaning there is compressed pricing near the head of the odds board and, by extension, more generous numbers further down than might otherwise be the case.

That market structure creates an opportunity for several mid-range and long shot runners whose profiles suggest they can significantly outrun their starting prices if they get even breaks and reasonable setups.

Below are some of the more interesting candidates trading at 12-1 or higher who look like potential overperformers relative to their odds.

Emerging Market

Emerging Market, from trainer Chad Brown, is priced at 12-1 (odds have dropped from 16/1) and has been described by several analysts as a horse still moving forward rather than one that has already peaked.

He goes into this race as the Louisiana Derby winner, beating Pavlovian (also a runner) by a head, and will be paired with regular jockey Flavien Prat.

At these odds, he offers more value than some shorter-priced rivals because he combines tactical versatility with a finishing kick that should be suited to a truly run ten furlongs.

If the leaders overdo it in the early stages, Emerging Market is one of the more logical candidates to pick up the pieces late and at least run into the frame at an each-way price.

So Happy

So Happy, at 12/1, comes from trainer Mark Glatt, and it’s his draw from gate 8 which really boosts his chances. Journalism was second from this stall in 2025, and Mage won it from gate 8 in 2023.

Despite attracting less early buzz, he did win the Santa Anita Derby last time out and has shown enough early speed to secure a good stalking position.

He is not a need-the-lead type, which should allow his rider, Mike Smith, to adapt to whatever pace scenario unfolds.

The main knock against So Happy is that he has only run at Santa Anita, in a field no bigger than seven runners, and could only manage third place in Grade 2 back in March.

That likely explains his double-figure odds, but in a race where many punters gravitate to headline performances, a horse like So Happy can slip slightly under the radar.

Danon Bourbon

Danon Bourbon also sits at 12/1 (down from 16/1) and is a colt who may relish the Derby distance more than some better-fancied rivals.

The Japanese-trained three-year-old will have to overcome some pretty stiff stats if he is to go on to win the Kentucky Derby 2026, not least of which is that no horse from Japan has not only never won the race, but from the ten to start, only one, Forever Young, finished third.

Trainer Manabu Ikezoe and jockey Atsuya Nishimura will be hoping to change that on Saturday, and his three wins from three starts in Japan will be a big boost to his claims.

He is a bit of a mystery compared to his rivals, which can be a good thing if he is underestimated. The only issue is that there is no way to tell if he has ever run against the opposition of the Kentucky Derby 2026 caliber.

On balance, the odds are fair, but there is risk.

Great White

Great White only entered the field when Silent Tactic was scratched, and he sits among the rank outsiders at 50/1.

Late additions often lack the same profile or prep-season narrative as the main contenders, which is clearly reflected in his price, but that does not mean they are devoid of any chance in a race historically known for big-priced shockers.

Realistically, Great White’s most plausible route to outrunning his odds is to grab a place rather than to win outright, but at 100/1 that is still a great return on an each-way bet.

He was well-beaten into fifth place last time out, weakening from 2f out, but if he can find a bit of stamina, all will not be lost.

Dark Horses and Betting Strategy

Beyond these named horses, the board includes a range of runners in the 30-1 to 50-1 bracket, such as Albus, Litmas Test, Pavlovian, Intrepido, Six Speed, and Wonder Dean, each of whom will have supporters looking to beat the market with price over probability.

The difficulty is separating genuine under-the-radar candidates from horses whose odds fairly reflect limited form or unsuitable running styles for a chaotic twenty-runner Kentucky Derby 2026.

From a value standpoint, focusing on mid-range prices like Emerging Market and So Happy, or Danon Bourbon, strikes a balance between realistic winning chances and meaningful returns.

Incorporating one or two of the bigger prices, such as Great White, into wider accas can further leverage the possibility that at least one outsider sneaks into the top four in what looks a competitive, fluid renewal.
