It’s the question we all want the answer to, but short of having a crystal ball, there is simply no way to know which of this year’s packed field will win the Derby on Saturday.

What we do know is that there are four clear 2026 Kentucky Derby favourites, which of course doesn’t necessarily mean any of them will reign victorious but right now, they are the runners to beat.

So let’s take a look at who is heading the betting markets and which has the best shot at taking glory.

Renegade: Rail-drawn

Renegade is the official favourite at 5-1 after drawing post 1 and arriving off back‑to‑back graded stakes wins, including the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby on March 28.

Trained by Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher, he is by Into Mischief out of Spice Is Nice (by Curlin), giving him a pedigree proven at the highest level and stamina depth on the dam side.

His jockey is Irad Ortiz Jr., a multiple Eclipse Award winner who is 0‑for‑9 in the Kentucky Derby so far but chose Renegade over several other mounts, including Commandment and Further Ado, which is a concrete show of confidence in this colt’s chances.

He broke through in February’s Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa, winning by nearly four lengths with a strong finishing punch.

He then backed that up in the Arkansas Derby, again closing from the rear of the field to win decisively. Timeform US figures from that race show his speed ratings rising through each segment – 102 at the quarter, 109 at the half and three‑quarters, and 119 at the finish – evidence that he builds momentum rather than flattening out late.

The main concern is his inside draw. The rail at Churchill Downs has not produced a Derby winner since 1986, and traffic risk is real in a 20‑runner field.

Renegade is a grinder/closer who tends to settle back early, so Ortiz must avoid getting trapped behind fading horses on the inside into the first turn.

If he secures clear running in the back straight, his consistent late fractions and paired top figures make him one of the logical favourites on pure form.

Commandment: Half-brother with Florida Derby form

commandment

Commandment is around 4‑1 and is also by Into Mischief, which makes him Renegade’s half‑brother, putting a genuine family rivalry at the top of the market.

He drew gate 6, an advantageous mid‑pack position that gives his rider, Luis Saez, options to stalk or sit a touch further back depending on how aggressively the inside speed breaks.

Commandment’s key prep win came in the Florida Derby, where he confirmed himself as a top‑tier Classic contender by defeating several rivals he re‑encounters at Churchill Downs.

Earlier in the spring, he won the Fountain of Youth Stakes, beating Chief Wallabee and The Puma in a race that showcased his tactical intelligence and acceleration.

The knock on Commandment is whether he has already shown his very best, and whether those Florida efforts left a mark, with a few observers suggesting he looked a touch tired late in his final prep.

However, there is no ambiguity about his credentials: multiple graded stakes wins at nine furlongs, proven against several fellow contenders, and a draw that suits his stalking style.

Further Ado: Gun Runner son with high-level consistency

Further Ado also sits around 6‑1 and is one of the most consistent horses in the entire field, coming in with a series of high‑class efforts that have kept him towards the top of futures markets.

He is by Gun Runner, whose own third place in the 2016 Kentucky Derby underlines that Further Ado is bred to handle the ten‑furlong trip and the pressure of a Classic.

He drew towards the outside from gate 18, which means he will likely need to break alertly and either drop in behind or commit to a three‑wide stalking trip into the first turn.

Further Ado has stayed near the top of every major contender list, has never disgraced himself in graded company, and arrives with no obvious distance doubts.

Chief Wallabee: upward trajectory with key form lines

Chief Wallabee is generally priced at 7‑1 and rounds out the clear top four in the betting.

He is trained by Bill Mott, who won last year’s Derby with Sovereignty, and he will again be ridden by Junior Alvarado, who got his first Derby victory in 2025.

Chief Wallabee is a bay colt by Constitution out of A La Lucie (by Medaglia d’Oro), bred in Kentucky and campaigned as a homebred for Michael and Katherine Ball.

He has only three starts heading into the Derby: a maiden win, followed by a second in the Fountain of Youth, and a third in the Florida Derby, both behind Commandment.

In the Florida Derby, he again ran respectably, making a four‑wide move around the far turn but getting outfinished late after having to thread between horses, a trip that demanded both courage and stamina.

Mott has opted to add blinkers for the Kentucky Derby, explicitly to sharpen Chief Wallabee’s focus after those two defeats, where he may have lost concentration.

How The Kentucky Derby Favourites Fit Together

On paper, the favourite group is tightly defined and form-based.

Renegade is the late‑running rail‑drawn closer with the strongest recent figures.

Commandment is his half‑brother and main tactical stalker, proven in Florida prep races and drawn to get a clean trip.

Further Ado is the Gun Runner son whose consistency at graded level keeps him right near the top of the market.

Chief Wallabee is the lightly raced improver with powerful connections and back‑to‑back strong efforts behind Commandment.

Together, they give the 2026 Kentucky Derby a clearly defined, factual top four, with each bringing specific, documented strengths and identifiable questions that go far beyond vague hype.
