William Hill Lincoln 2026 Preview, Tips & Race Analysis
The flat season’s proper curtain-raiser, the £150,000 William Hill Lincoln at Doncaster, has its usual competitive look, with 22 runners set to line up on Town Moor. It is one of the most sought-after handicaps of the early season and regularly throws up a deep and tightly matched field.
Good-to-soft ground is expected and, as ever over Doncaster’s straight mile, the draw will have a say. Low numbers are often favoured on the near side in these conditions, though pace and track position can still play their part in a race where small margins make a big difference.
La Botte heads the market but faces a question
At the head of the betting, La Botte (9-12, Harry Eustace / Jamie Spencer, Draw 13) is a general 4-1 favourite and comes here with a strong profile for a race like this. The four-year-old son of Too Darn Hot caught the eye at Wolverhampton in March, finishing strongly after an awkward start left him further back than ideal. It was the sort of run that suggested he had more in hand than the bare result.
Before that, he was unlucky in the Britannia at Royal Ascot, finishing second in his group of 20 after repeatedly meeting trouble in running.
Harry Eustace’s yard has been in excellent recent form, which only adds to the case. The one concern is the ground. All of his turf runs have come on a sound surface, so this represents a different test. If he handles the conditions, he looks the class act in the field, but it is not a risk-free position at the top of the market.

Eternal Force the one with a clear plan
A very strong alternative, and arguably the most interesting runner in the race, is Eternal Force (9-4, William Haggas / Cieren Fallon, Draw 6). The four-year-old has done nothing but improve since being gelded, winning all three starts and completing a hat-trick with an impressive success at Haydock in October, where he pulled clear late on.
What makes him especially appealing is that this race has clearly been the plan for some time. Maureen Haggas flagged the Lincoln as a target straight after that Haydock win, which is a notable sign of intent from a yard that places its horses carefully.
He now steps into this level for the first time, but everything about his profile suggests he is still improving. With the Haggas stable also in excellent recent form, and Cieren Fallon booked to ride, he looks to have very solid claims.
Solid contenders and value plays in behind
Rogue Diplomat (9-3, James Owen / Harry Davies, Draw 5) arrives in top form after four consecutive wins, the latest coming on soft ground. He clearly has confidence behind him, though his jockey noted he was tiring late and prefers to be produced through runners. In a large field like this, that may require things to fall right, but his current run of form keeps him firmly in contention.
Alpha Crucis (9-1, Gary & Josh Moore / Rhys Clutterbuck, Draw 4) A fine second at Goodwood on good-to-soft in September and a placed effort at Sandown among his recent highlights. He finished eighth in last year's Lincoln.
Shout (9-9, Simon and Ed Crisford / Robert Havlin, Draw 19) also has claims after a strong Ascot win on soft ground in September and a respectable effort from a higher mark last time. He remains relatively unexposed and could still have improvement in him, though the wide draw is not ideal.
Further down the weights, Theoryofeverything (9-2, David O’Meara / Oisin Orr, Draw 10) has slipped to a workable mark and is proven on soft ground. He shaped well when second at Ayr in September and looks capable of being competitive.
Orandi (9-2, A J Martin / Jack Kearney (3), Draw 20) was third in this race last year and returns from a similar mark. His soft-ground form is strong, though he may need luck from a wide position.
Top weight Botanical (9-12, K R Burke / Sam James, Draw 3) has the ability on old form, including a strong Listed performance at Goodwood in 2024, but has not quite matched that level recently.
Verdict
La Botte sets the standard on form and could be very hard to beat, but there are enough question marks at the price to look elsewhere for value.
Eternal Force stands out as the most interesting option, a progressive horse from a yard in excellent form who has been targeted at this race for months. Alpha Crucis looks the solid value play given his course record and conditions, while Rogue Diplomat adds depth to the each-way mix at bigger odds.
