When a horse is called Monbeg Genius, expectations are bound to be high, and heading into the 2025 Grand National, this one might just live up to the name.

Trained by Jonjo O’Neill and his son AJ, there’s a growing feeling that this clever stayer could be about to take centre stage.

He’s got stamina, he jumps well, and he’s been quietly building a solid reputation without shouting about it.

The O’Neills know how to get a horse ready for Aintree – Jonjo has done it before with Don’t Push It – and Monbeg Genius might just be their next serious crack at the big one.

If he’s as brainy as his name suggests, don’t be surprised if he’s still very much in the mix when they round the elbow.

Grand National Prospects

Monbeg Genius’s 2024/25 campaign has been a mix of promise and setbacks. After a respectable fourth in the Welsh Grand National in December, he bounced back with a win at Uttoxeter in February 2025.

This victory, coming off a rating of 142, demonstrated his ability to handle heavy ground and stay the distance, crucial attributes for Grand National success.

Incidentally, he carried a whopping 12 stone at Uttoxeter. For the National, he will only carry 10-06, so more than a stone and a half less!

Co-trainer AJ O’Neill’s comments after the Uttoxeter win were particularly telling:

“We’ve been waiting for this day with him as the form at Cheltenham worked out well. It’s great to see him get his head in front.”

This statement suggests the team has had the Grand National in mind for some time.

Currently priced around 33-1 for the 2025 Grand National, Monbeg Genius represents an intriguing prospect.

His stamina, jumping ability, and improving form make him a serious contender for the world’s most famous steeplechase.

The O’Neill Factor

Trainer Jonjo O’Neill is no stranger to Grand National success and his experience in preparing horses for the unique challenges of Aintree could prove invaluable for Monbeg Genius.

The addition of O’Neill’s son, AJ, to the training license in 2024 has brought fresh energy to the yard.

AJ, who completed his BHA training modules last year, has taken on increased responsibility, particularly in sourcing talent at sales.

This father-son partnership combines decades of experience with youthful innovation, potentially giving Monbeg Genius an edge in his Grand National preparation.

Ownership Controversy and New Beginnings

Women in the Grand National

Those of you who follow horse racing quite closely may remember that the horse was embroiled in quite a controversy last year.

He was previously owned by Conservative peer Michelle Mone and her husband Doug Barrowman, who purchased him for £80,000 in November 2020 as a wedding gift.

However, the couple found themselves in very hot water surrounding PPE contracts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

There was so much scrutiny on them that they actually withdrew Monbeg Genius from the 2024 Grand National so as ot avoid even more unwanted publicity.

Then, in October 2024, Monbeg Genius was sold to new owners Martin Tedham & Wasdell Properties Ltd, allowing the focus to return to the horse’s racing career, free from off-track distractions.

Why Monbeg Genius Deserves Attention

Several factors make Monbeg Genius a horse to watch for the 2025 Grand National:

Proven stamina: His performances over long distances, including the Welsh Grand National, show he has the staying power for Aintree’s grueling 4-mile test.

Improving form: His recent win at Uttoxeter suggests he’s hitting peak form at the right time.

Experienced connections: The O’Neill team knows what it takes to win a Grand National.

Age and experience: At nine years old, Monbeg Genius is entering his prime years for National Hunt racing.

Adaptability: He’s shown the ability to perform on various ground conditions, a crucial asset for the unpredictable April weather at Aintree.

His Chances

So, is Monbeg Genius the next big thing for Jonjo O’Neill in the Grand National?

He’s got the engine, the attitude, and the right team behind him. Aintree is no place for passengers, and this horse certainly doesn’t travel quietly.

If the cards fall kindly and the fences don’t get in the way, don’t be surprised if Monbeg Genius is galloping into the history books – brains, brawn, and maybe just a little bit of magic.
