Every year, there’s a horse in the Grand National field that slips under the radar and causes a stir, and in 2025, that horse might just be Hyland.

Trained by Nicky Henderson, a man who’s won just about everything in jump racing except the Grand National, Hyland isn’t the flashy name in the line-up, but there’s something quietly exciting about his chances.

He’s been improving steadily, stays well, and has the kind of no-nonsense attitude you need to take on 30 fences and over four miles at Aintree.

Henderson hasn’t always been known for targeting the National, but when he sends one, it’s usually worth a look.

Hyland might not be the shortest price in the betting, but that’s part of the fun. He’s the sort of horse that could jump his way into contention when others are starting to struggle.

If you’re after a runner with potential and a touch of mystery, Hyland might be your horse.

He’s definitely one of mine and not only have I tipped him, I’ve also put my money where my mouth is and backed him a couple of weeks ago at 25/1!

So, what can I tell you about Hyland…

A Solid Season So Far

The last few months have been particularly noteworthy for Hyland. He kicked off his campaign with back-to-back novice chase victories, both at Cheltenham in October and November.

This win set the tone for what was to come, as Hyland continued to impress with each subsequent run.

Perhaps his most eye-catching performance came on Boxing Day at Kempton, where he finished a close second to The Jukebox Man in the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices’ Chase.

This run not only showcased Hyland’s ability to compete at the highest level but also hinted at his potential for even greater achievements.

Most recently, Hyland put in another solid performance in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Kempton in February.

Despite finishing second to the impressive Katate Dori, he demonstrated his staying power and versatility, qualities that are essential for any Grand National contender.

In each of his first three races, he carried 11-07, which was then upped to 11-13 last time out. In contrast, he will be running off 10-06 in the Grand National – a full stone and a half less, which will certainly make it easier getting over those fences!

Impressing Henderson

Nicky Henderson, Hyland’s trainer, has been particularly impressed with the gelding’s progress.

“Normally he is up there, or he makes the running, as he did in the Grade One at Kempton Park at Christmas,” Henderson noted.

“I was pleased enough with his latest run as it was on soft ground and he was ridden from the back in the ruck.”

What makes Hyland particularly intriguing as a Grand National prospect is his combination of speed and stamina.

Henderson believes that Aintree could be the perfect stage for Hyland to showcase his talents. “He is an out-and-out stayer, but a decent one at that, who wants good ground,” the trainer remarked.

Plenty of Competition

However, the path to Grand National glory is never straightforward. Hyland will face stiff competition, and as a novice chaser, he’ll need to overcome the challenge of Aintree’s formidable fences.

Yet, his current odds suggest that he could be a value bet for those looking for an outsider with genuine potential.

For Nicky Henderson, Hyland represents more than just another runner. Despite being one of the most successful trainers in British racing history, with six trainers’ championships and 73 Cheltenham Festival wins to his name, the Grand National has remained frustratingly elusive.

Henderson’s quest for Grand National success began in 1979 when his very first runner, Zongalero, finished second. He came close again in 1987 with The Tsarevich, but in 43 attempts, victory has always slipped through his grasp.

Now, at the age of 74, Henderson sees in Hyland a genuine chance to finally break his Grand National duck.

Following his second Cheltenham win, Henderson said: “We’re doing something different – he’ll run at Kempton on Saturday and then hopefully go for the Grand National, that’s the plan.

“We’re going this route because we don’t want to go to Cheltenham and we do want to go to Aintree. That’s the gist of it.”

Can He Win?

Nothing would give me greater pleasure than to see Nicky Henderson win the Grand National. He’s had his chances in the past, but there’s a palpable sense of excitement surrounding Hyland’s prospects.

While the likes of Intense Raffles and I Am Maximus may be grabbing the headlines, Hyland could well be the surprise package that racing fans are looking for.

With his proven ability over staying distances and his trainer’s meticulous preparation, he has all the ingredients to make a significant impact in the world’s most famous steeplechase.

As the big day approaches, all eyes will be on this promising grey gelding from Seven Barrows.

Could Hyland be the horse to finally deliver Grand National glory for Nicky Henderson?

Only time will tell, but one thing’s for certain – this is a story that racing fans will be following with keen interest right up to the starting tape at Aintree.
