The last Grand National of the year, or the first of the season, depending on which way you look at it and we’re off to Chepstow for the 2022 Coral Welsh National. The race is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, 27th December 2022 at 14.50pm. UK viewers can watch it live on iTV4.
History has told us that the weather can be particularly tricky at this time of year, so much so that the Welsh National has previously been moved into January when the course was waterlogged or frozen over. That happened in 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2017.
However, all being well this year we should have a cracker of a race on our hands. At the time of writing, there are 17 contenders who will battle it out for the coveted win.

Welsh Grand National 2022 Entries
This is always a popular race and many see it as a precursor to either Cheltenham or the Aintree Grand National. A long-distance chase, the race is run over 3m6½f with 23 obstacles to be navigated.
The Big Dog will lead the pack on the top weight of 12 stone. Trained by Peter Fahey, he ran last year but pulled up so connections will be hoping he can do better this time around. Though top weight is a big ask.
Statistically, though, he doesn’t fit with the trend of younger Welsh National winners. In fact, since 2004 there have only been three winners older than eight years of age. They were Mountainous in 2015 (11), Raz De Maree in 2017 (13) and Potters Corner in 2019 (9).
So if you’re looking to whittle down the card, look at the younger chasers. The Big Breakaway, Fantastikas and Regina Dracones are all 7-years-old.
Welsh Grand National 2022 Tips
As with any race of this magnitude, trying to pick a winner is not straightforward as the going at Chepstow will play a huge part in who could run well.
The going at Chepstow today is Good to Soft and younger horses win more often than their older counterparts so look at those aged 8 years or younger.
Only two of the last 10 winners carried more than 10-10. It’s a long tough slog around Chepstow in December so the less a horse has to carry the better.
In 2021 Iwilldoit won as an 8-year-old carrying 10-00 so it’s a trend worth keeping in mind.
Ticking both of those boxes is Regina Dracones from Thomas Gibney though recent form suggests it may be difficult for the mare to seriously challenge.
Also fitting the criteria are Wayfinder and Movethechains with Wayfinder already having notched up a win at Chepstow this season.
They are all around 16/1 or 18/1 so by no means the favourites for the race but could be worth an each-way consideration.
