Welsh Grand National Runners & Odds 2021

The last Grand National of the year, or the first of the season, depending on which way you look at it and we’re off to Chepstow for the 2021 Coral Welsh National. The race is scheduled to take place on Monday, 27th December 2021 at 14.50pm. UK viewers can watch it live on iTV4.

History has told us that the weather can be particularly tricky at this time of year, so much so that the Welsh National has previously been moved into January when the course was waterlogged or frozen over. That happened in 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2017.

However, all being well this year we should have a cracker of a race on our hands. At the time of writing, there are still 30 contenders left in contention.

That said, the race has a maximum of 20 runners so still a few to go before we get our final line-up!

Welsh Grand National 2021 Entries

This is always a popular race and many see it as a precursor to either Cheltenham or the Aintree Grand National. A long-distance chase, the race is run over 3m6½f with 23 obstacles to be navigated.

The 2019 winner Potters Corner is back again to regain his crown. Also in the potential line-up is Welsh Grand National 2020 Secret Reprieve, who gave Evan Williams his first win in the Chepstow race. So it’s also no surprise that he is the favourite for this year’s race.

Native River, now 11-years-old, will carry top weight of 11-12. This won’t be a huge obstacle as Native River has already won the Welsh National with that weight, back in 2016. Though five years older, he is still in fine form and could make another splash on Monday.

Statistically, though, he doesn’t fit with the trend of younger Welsh National winners. In fact, since 2004 there have only been three winners older than eight years of age. They were Mountainous in 2015 (11), Raz De Maree in 2017 (13) and Potters Corner in 2019 (9).

So if you’re looking to whittle down the card, look at the younger chasers.

Welsh Grand National 2021 Tips

As with any race of this magnitude, trying to pick a winner is not straightforward. Firstly the field needs to be reduced and secondly, the going at Chepstow will play a huge part in who could run well.

Younger horses win more often than their older counterparts so look at those aged 8 years or younger.

Only two of the last 10 winners carried more than 10-10. It’s a long tough slog around Chepstow in December so the less a horse has to carry the better.

Ticking both of those boxes is Highland Hunter from Paul Nicholls. Add to that a recent win at Sandown, carrying top weight, over 3m5f and it’s easy to see why Highland Hunter is fancied to take the win at Chepstow.

Mighty Thunder at 12/1 offers decent value and his track record is equally as impressive. Winner of the Scottish National back in April, he was also second in the Midlands Grand National at Uttoxeter over 4m2f. Stamina in bucket loads!
